Bushfire Recovery Taskforce Final Report

The Bushfire Recovery Taskforce's final report to Government is a thorough account of the bushfire recovery process. It outlines key activities, progress to date, lessons learned and visions for the future to help build a better future for the ACT.

The ACT Bushfire Recovery Taskforce was established following the bushfire disaster on 18 January 2003.

The Taskforce is representative of the entire Canberra and ACT community, including those directly affected by the fires.

The Taskforce will inform and coordinate all the government, business and community services involved to get the recovery process completed as quickly as possible.

It will work in partnership with the Government and community to:

  1. support those who have been significantly impacted by the fires;
  2. ensure that the community actively participates in the process of rebuilding and recovery;
  3. ensure clean up of the Territory in a way that is safe, timely, efficient, cost effective and respectful;
  4. facilitate rebuilding in a way that is safe, timely, streamlined and provides individuals with real choices;
  5. provide up to date, relevant and useful information to assist with the recovery process, and;
  6. learn lessons from this event so the ACT Community moves forward positively.

Community and Expert Reference Group comprising representation from each of the area's where there has been a major impact. This comprises of the:

  • Community sector
  • Business sector
  • Education sector
  • Unions planning, architecture and the environment
  • Relevant Commonwealth authorities

The composition of the reference group will be adjusted as necessary to reflect the issues and the tasks that need to be addressed.

The Recovery Taskforce will have the following functions:

  • Develop the ACT Bushfire recovery Plan
  • Provide regular progress reports to the Chief Minister, as well as regular community and media information on recovery progress
  • Provide advice to government of the needs and responses of the disaster victims and the affected communities
  • Through the community and expert reference group, coordinate the actions of peak community, welfare, business and education organisations in their contributions to the Bushfire recovery to ensure the most effective use of skills and resources
  • Coordinate public infrastructure, housing, commercial and community organisation recovery and reconstruction
  • Coordinate the ongoing government services, aspects of community recovery including accommodation, finance/insurance, assistance programs, one stop shop assistance, donations and volunteering
  • Provide advice on planning and environmental aspects of the recovery
