Public Liability
Insurance
The ACT Government has announced a public liability insurance
policy to cover owners whose homes were destroyed by the ACT
bushfires.
The public liability insurance is through QBE Mercantile
Mutual and is designed to assist home owners who have either
settled their home insurance claim or whose insurance policies
have expired and no longer have public liability insurance.
In many instances, these people have been unable to purchase
public liability insurance from insurance agencies.
This new insurance cover will ensure they are covered for
the consequences of a third party being injured on their block.
Home-owners can purchase the public liability insurance immediately
after they settle their home insurance claim, or after their
home insurance policy expires. Insurance policies can be purchased
by completing the Public
Liability Insurance for Vacant Blocks' form and taking
the form and payment to a Canberra Connect Shopfront at Civic,
Tuggeranong, Woden or Belconnen.
The insurance will cost $181.50 and includes GST and stamp
duty. Information about this insurance can be obtained from
the Insurance Adviser at the Bushfire Recovery Taskforce on
6207 9035.
Owners purchasing public liability insurance will be required
to secure their block with onion bag type fencing, repair
or install swimming pool fences and ensure appropriate signage
on their block.
Owners who are unable to secure their blocks, may contract
Totalcare to provide suitable fencing. The Totalcare 24hour
Helpline can be contacted by calling 6213 0700.
