Lucky continuing on the recovery path
July 2008
Lucky became a community favourite after
Rangers from Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve found her in the top
of a tree six days after the Canberra firestorm burnt 99 per
cent of the Reserve.
Lucky’s has struggled to recover from
the injuries sustained recovery had been slow and she has
overcome some massive hurdles along the way. After spending
several months in ‘intensive care’ at the National
Zoo and Aquarium, Lucky moved back to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve
in October 2003.
Lucky was taken out of public view last
year, and spent the remainder of her life enjoying the peace
and quiet of retirement.
Lucky was the only survivor from the koala
enclosure at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and it is still not
known how Lucky survived, but it is thought that she may have
taken refuge in a mountain creek, which flowed through the
koala enclosure, before returning to the tree where she was
found.
Lucky had lived a longer life then most
Koalas and was estimated to be between 12 and 14 years old.
